500 New Scholarships Provided By UC

On 1st August 2009, UC announced 500 scholarships for newly graduated high school students. The Samdech Techo Hun Sen – Dr. Haruhisa Handa National Scholarships will provide 500 students, full tuition, to pursue their academic studies at The University of Cambodia. UC President, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn stated, “The goal of UC is to provide equal opportunities for all Cambodian high school students.”

Since 2007, UC has provided over 1,500 students with scholarships. This year the scholarship allows students to study for 5 years so that their preparation year will also be fully sponsored. Dr. Kao stressed the importance of education in these times of global economic and financial downturn.

“By providing as many students as possible with a high standard of education, we are creating a highly qualified workforce.

The better the Cambodian youth is educated, the better the future of the Cambodian nation will be.”

True to its philosophy of equal opportunity, UC scholarship exams are open to all high school students, from across Cambodia, who have recently passed the national high school exam. The scholarships are attainable not only for Phnom Penh students, but also for those students living in provinces.

“Every year we want to open doors for as many students as possible. At UC we want to give everybody the same chance,” stated Dr. Kao.

To make the exams even more accessible than in the previous years, UC has decided to drop the grade requirements students have received upon completing high school. In previous years students were required to have obtained A to D grades. This year every high school students who have passed the national high school exam are eligible for the Samdech Techo Hun Sen-Dr. Haruhisa Handa National Scholarships.

Up until September 13, 2009, all high school graduates can obtain and fill out an application form at UC. On September 16, the exam will be held and on September 30 the names of the new UC scholarship students will be announced.
